Naturopaths and Thyroid Health

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located in the neck that produces hormones that regulate metabolism and affect many bodily functions. When the thyroid gland malfunctions, it can cause a range of health problems, including weight gain or loss, fatigue, hair loss, and mood disorders. Thyroid hormone testing can help diagnose thyroid problems and guide treatment.

There are several types of thyroid hormone tests that can be used to diagnose thyroid problems, including:

  1. TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) Test: This is the most common thyroid test, which measures the level of TSH in the blood. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland in response to low levels of thyroid hormone in the blood. High levels of TSH indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while low levels indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

  2. T4 (thyroxine) Test: This measures the level of the thyroid hormone T4 in the blood. T4 is the most abundant thyroid hormone in the blood, and its level is often used to diagnose hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

  3. T3 (triiodothyronine) Test: This measures the level of the thyroid hormone T3 in the blood. T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone, and its level is often used to diagnose hyperthyroidism.

  4. Thyroid Antibody Tests: These tests measure the levels of antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. High levels of these antibodies can indicate autoimmune thyroid disease, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease.

Although a doctor may say results are normal, as Naturopaths we are looking for optimum health and interpret pathology differently. It is worth getting a second opinion if your tests have come back "normal" but you still have symptoms.

Thyroid issues can manifest in a variety of ways, depending on whether the thyroid gland is under-active (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism).

Hypothyroidism symptoms can include:

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

  • Cold intolerance

  • Constipation

  • Dry skin

  • Hair loss

  • Depression

Hyperthyroidism symptoms can include:

  • Weight loss

  • Anxiety

  • Rapid heart rate

  • Insomnia

  • Heat intolerance

  • Sweating

  • Diarrhoea

Conventional medical treatment for thyroid issues will depend on the specific condition and severity of symptoms. In some cases, thyroid nodules or goiters (enlarged thyroid glands) may need to be removed surgically, especially if they are causing breathing or swallowing problems.

In Naturopathy the treatment will depend on the cause of the thyroid issue. This can involve a variety of herbs and treatments to help rectify nutrient levels, support stress or remove toxins among other things.

Thyroid hormone testing is an important tool for diagnosing thyroid issues and guiding treatment. If you are experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, talk to a healthcare provider about getting tested. With the right diagnosis and treatment, thyroid issues can be managed effectively, allowing you to live a healthy and active life.
